Cernobbio, just across the water

From the terrace at Como Rental you look straight across the lake to Cernobbio — close enough to see the windows of Villa d'Este light up at dusk. It's a ten-minute drive around the southern tip of the lake, or a short ferry ride.

What to do

• · Villa d'Este — the legendary 16th-century hotel; its gardens and the bar are open to visitors.
• · Villa Erba — Luchino Visconti's family villa, with grounds you can wander.
• · Piazza Risorgimento — the lakeside square, the heart of an evening passeggiata.
• · The Greenway del Lago di Como — a marked walking route that starts here and runs 10 km along the western shore.

Where to eat & drink

Aperitivo on the piazza, then dinner at Trattoria del Vapore for old-school Comasco cooking, or Materia for a contemporary tasting menu (Michelin-starred, worth booking).
